In 2010, the technology was installed in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cars, what allowed to eliminate most of the EGR system and to ad the power (188 hp / 140 kW instead of 154 hp / 115 kW).
BlueTEC: Working Mechanism Explanation:
BlueTEC system is a modular concept, which combines various closely related technologies aimed at minimizing emissions of harmful substances. It includes a Selective Catalytic Reduction, which reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides by passing exhaust gases through a special catalytic converter and treating them there with a water-based AdBlue additive, as well as a diesel particulate filter and a NOx system of DeNOx adsorbers.
The list of steps of cleaning the exhaust gases is the following:
Diesel oxidation filters reduce the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) emitted from the exhaust pipe.
The catalytic converter DeNOx removes nitrogen oxides.
The particulate filter removes soot particles from the exhaust and burns them until it is full.
The catalytic converter of the SCR system with the addition of AdBlue (a solution of commercially pure urea in demineralized water that is injected into the exhaust gas stream) converts the remaining nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system the EGR system for exhaust gas recirculation - in combustion engines - the system for reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere, which is a valve that connects in some operating modes the throttling space of the intake manifold with the exhaust space collector.
It is used on gasoline, diesel and gas engines. It is designed to reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases (NOx: NOx and NO2 nitrogen oxides) under partial load conditions.
In more complex systems, the supply of exhaust gases is controlled by electronic valves associated with the engine management system. In the most modern designs of motors which are using the control of the phases of the gas distribution, the described effect (the "addition" of exhaust gases to the working mixture) is realized by the control of the phases of the gas distribution, which makes it possible to simplify the engine design (no special valve is needed) and improve reliability
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a part of the exhaust system of a diesel engine car .
It is designed to reduce the amount of soot (soot particles) in the exhaust gases.
It is a ceramic block made of silicon carbide with a large number of fine channels for the passage of waste gases. Soot particles , remaining on the surface of these channels, are getting oxidized and converted to carbon dioxide into the atmosphere with exhaust gases under the influence of high temperature and other factors.
Structurally placed in a separate metal casing and located immediately after the turbine or after the catalyst (or after the second catalyst, if there are two). In Europe it is installed on diesel-engine cars since 2001, in accordance with the requirements of environmental standard “Euro-4”.
